Key qualifications

Birgit Pauksztat is a Research Professor at the Nordland Research Institute and a Professor at the Business School at Nord University in Bodø.

Her research interests are in the areas of social network analysis, organizational behaviour and maritime sociology. An important focus of her research is to better understand the factors that shape social support, psychological safety and trust – all of these are key aspects of workplace culture that contribute to employee well-being, safety and performance. Empirically, much of my recent work has focused on maritime occupations, notably seafarers on cargo ships.

Another ongoing research projects concerns the role of social relationships for dealing with everyday problems at work in different organizational settings. An emergent area of interest concerns diversity and inclusion in a work context, especially with regard to people with disabilities.

Prior to joining the Nordland Research Institute, Birgit Pauksztat was an Associate Professor (docent) at the Department of Business Studies at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland (2017-2023), a Senior Lecturer at the University of Greenwich in London, UK (2015-17), and an Assistant Professor at the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, Finland (2011-2015). She has worked at the British Museum in London, UK, both as researcher in the North America collections with a focus on projects related to the North American Arctic (2000-2001, 2004-2005), and as a curator for the Zayed National Museum project (2010-2011).
