More sustainable low-carbon wooden elements by recycling waste wood and wooden materials of the construction industry and the forestry

Interreg Aurora

Wood waste in Nordic countries, especially in the construction sector, increases during both the construction and demolition phases, with a substantial amount being burned for energy recovery. A recent statistical study shows that Finland, Sweden, and Norway burn up a large volume of wood waste from construction sources (700.000 - 800.000 m3 annually). Other waste streams occur in sawmills, the wood mechanical industry, and forestry (due to biodiversity control measures), including non-indigenous Sitka Spruce waste (mainly in Norway). As a fact, using wood waste for heat or energy recovery contributes to CO2 emissions. A substantial portion of the wood waste could be used for higher value and prevent already confined CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.

The main challenge is to transition from CO2-emitting waste wood practices to sustainable solutions and circular models through applied scientific methods and innovative value chains. The project aims to explore innovative methods for recycling wood waste into new products and business models. That emphasizes circular solutions and sustainable practices by employing an extensive feasibility study and data collection, locally adapted solutions, and cross-border collaboration among stakeholders to develop best practices. The project focuses on advancing from recovery strategies to remanufacturing strategies, with an emphasis on cross-laminated timber (CLT).

As an outcome, it can increase circularity, reduce the use of virgin resources, and lower environmental impact. In addition, this project will address potential obstacles posed by current legislation governing wood waste recycling processes in the partner countries, including waste law directives and EU product legislation.
