The annual Trænafestivalen took place at the EmpowerUs Norwegian Transition Coastal Lab of Træna from the 10th to the 13th of July. As part of this year's festival activities, the Norwegian TCL team co-organized a unique event called "Hekta på Træna" (Hooked on Træna in English) to promote the strong cultural bond between the Træna community and the sea. This event aimed to provide insight into the islands' rich fishing history.

Træna is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the Helgeland region. It is the oldest fishing village in Norway, made up of several islands, with a population of 449 inhabitants from at least seven nationalities. The local inhabitants call themselves “Havfolket” (The People of the Sea) as they live 38 km away from the Norwegian mainland. 

Approximately 60 participants took part in a treasure hunt across the main island. The treasure hunt featured ten posts, each offering interactive activities and unique insights into Træna's maritime heritage and environmental issues. Activities included learning about the history of fishing, cultural ties between the people of Træna and the sea, and addressing ocean plastic pollution through beach art and interactive games. Participants collected stamps at each post and enjoyed a complimentary fish barbecue at the finish line.

The organizers and partners of EmpowerUs aim to continue this successful Ocean Literacy activity in the future by creating a standalone legacy treasure hunt for the island, potentially launching it at next year's Trænafestivalen. The "Hooked on Træna" initiative seeks to enhance recognition of the connections between the Træna community and the sea, leading to a broader understanding and appreciation for the ocean.
